A Question Regarding Naveen's Language.
I understand that Maldonia is an imaginary country and all but I can't help but wonder what was the other language Naveen speaks in the film. For example, "Ashedanza!" What does it mean and in what language?

hay there!

There was a post like this at the spam party and I remember when looking at Princess and the Frog's "Ultimate Guide" at the bookstore and it said the following:

Achitanza = "Cool/marvelous/amazing!"

Abinaza = "goodbye/farewell"

Faldi Faldonza = "Oh my word, oh my god, oh no!"

Di Fraggi Prutto (sp?) = The Frog Prince

So is the language basically Maldonian? Or is it not stated?

yeah you're right about it perhaps being a mix of malta and macedonia by the name of the country, but I think in terms of language, it's just "maldonian" haha. I don't know if they explicitly state the influence of other existing language/s.

Thanks! :D

I, er, get that a lot about that particular one. XD

So what does the Essential Guide include anyway? Does it have anything interesting besides the Maldonian translations, which is almost enough to make me want to buy it?

I think it's got some pretty interesting facts that you wouldn't have known otherwise.

Big Daddy La Bouff's clothes are all handmade, Tiana's friends all have names, Louis's trumpet is named Giselle, seven of Ray's relationals have names...

I really only bought it because it was 47 pages of full-color, fully illustrated, movie-spoiling goodness like a month and a half before the movie came out. XD It's basically a retelling of the story, with little facts and details. Each character has their own little page, etc. Most of it is stuff we already know, though, like "Charlotte's favorite color is pink!".

Must buy!

I wondered what the language is base off of, and the country of Maldonia.

There's a possibility that Maldonia is a mix of Malta and Macedonia.

phonetically only, achidanza sounds like "he/she/it dances like that" in spanish, which is spelled "así danza" and it's curious that the first time Naveen says it is while watching a kid dance. But I'm not saying that's what it means.

To me, his "language" sound like some weird mixture of romance languages such as italian, french, spanish, latin, etc.

I've always felt that Maldonian is most similar to Italian. I base the Maldonian I use in fanfiction off of it. :)

A lot of people (who don't know that Naveen is from Maldonia) wrongly think he is French and therefore speaks French. I took lessons for seven years, and there are practically no similarities between Maldonian and French. French barely uses Z's, and Maldonian is FULL of them. The pronunciation of G's (like in fragee pruto) is also completely different. The Maldonian 'the', 'de', is completely different from 'le/la/les' in French. 'De' means 'of' in French.

Like I said, I hear Italian. :)

How can they get 'French' out of anything, '(blahblah)DA'?
Hollyharikou on January 1st, 2010 04:16 am (UTC)
I. Do. Not. Know. XD

French words do NOT end in 'A' like every other Maldonian word does. XD

I guess people assume it's French because of Jean Bob. *eyeroll*
They just HAVE to insist Naveen is an all around rip-off. *sigh*

Ughhhhhhhhhhhh. I hate that. D: Jean-Bob is cheaply animated and Naveen has a MALDONIAN accent! And he actually IS a prince! xD

(Btw, this is Holly from IMDB. Hiiiiiii!)

Part of the reason they may think he's French might be because during the song the firefly sings, he translates two lines the firefly is saying in French.

Maybe European
Naveen is definately European. Well the Naveen Voice Actor wanted to sound french to make his character diverse. He looks African American, He sounds French, He Speaks Maldonian. "Its beautiful no?" typically a french language sterotype.. Like saying "Oui Oui Monseir".. Instead if just "Oui" or sometimes negatively "Si"
